Taipei is one of the best place in Asia for a culinary adventure. Tipping will destroy Taiwan’s local customs. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to pay more and book a hotel in Taipei that comes with breakfast. After immigration, we purchase our bus tickets at the arrival terminal and hop on 國光客運 (kuo-kuang bus) that takes us to Taipei Main Train Station.Īfter checking into our hotel, we walk around Ximending and pick up some street food before forcing ourselves to bed. Our first day is always wasted because the flight from LAX – TPE usually gets in late at night around 10pm. We will use Ximending as a base area for this itinerary. If you are unsure what to eat or are scared to communicate with a smile and gestures, there are always food court in the basement of most shopping centers in Taipei for easy ordering. But if you have the money and love luxury hotels such as the W, Da’an would be perfect. We try to always avoid 大安區 (Da’an District) because it is expensive and it caters to foreigners and their preferences. If you are young at heart, 西門町 (Ximending) is a good budget area to base yourself. 松山區 (Songshan District) near 南京東路站 (Nanjing East Road Station) is also a great area to be in. China is like a giant Las Vegas theme park in that it was newly-created to look authentic, while Taiwan is where authenticity thrives. People visit China for the government-made facade of Chinese culture one that was twisted by means of a 10-year oppression in education and human ethics, as well as a cultural cleansing called The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. To sum up the reasons why Taiwan is different from China (aside from the complex history and politics of Communist China and Democratic Taiwan): People visit Taiwan for the traditional and authentically-preserved Tao Chinese Culture mixed with great European and Japanese influences. I spent most of my childhood in 中正區 (Zhongzheng District) in Taipei and have visited every corner of Taiwan due to my wonderful and adventurous parents. The love for my home country and the constant struggle to convey to people that Taiwan is not China is an ongoing, but worthwhile, battle. Here’s another option: Edited Apby AndreaPerkins Globe will be replacing the DUO product with this So I need to find a new way to call the Philippines with basically unlimited calling that isn't extrememy expensive (or take on another job). She talks to her mother every day on the phone. My wife has adjusted to living in the US (even after the 2'+ of snow we got here in WI last week) but I know she misses her family. My wife's family lives in an area with horrible internet service (and expensive even by US standards) so talking over the phone is the best option. Unfortunatly I got an email from Globe the other day saying they are discontinuing the service at the end of the month. This service allows unlimited calling for $10 a month (only from the US to the Philippines not the other way around). So I used the service to assign a US phone number to my wife's phone in the Philippines and since she came here a little over a year ago the number has been assigned to her mother's phone. Essentially they take a Globe mobile cell phone in the Philippines of your choosing and and add a US based phone number to it. Since I met my wife a few years ago I used a service called Duo USA through Globe mobile. I am looking for a way to make calls to the Philippines that isn't too expensive.
